      John E. Lathrop was a landowner and farmer in the vicinity of Dawson, LacQuiParle Co., MN, at the time of his death. He enlisted in the Minnesota Volunteer Infantry on 23 August 1862 at Fort Snelling, MN, while a resident of Elgin, MN, at age 29, as a 2nd Lt. He was made a 1st Lt. on 16 February 1864. He was mustered into Federal Servi ce for Civil War duty on 24 September 1862 at Fort snelling, MN. He served with Company C, 10th Minn. Volunteer Infantry. He was honorably discharged on 30 March 1864 at St. Louis, MO.

      John's wife Martha Eliza Boyd immigrated as a youbng woman from Ireland, but would never admit to being Irish. She always claimed she was a Welshwoman.
