  1. 8.  George Wilson Lathrop 9 Sep 1866 Lucas County, OH (son of James Jerome Lathrop and Jane Edmonds); 7 Sep 1936.

    Notes:

George Wilson Lathrop went through the public schools and graduated from high school in Richfield Township, Ohio. He lived for a number of adolescent years with a Mr. and Mrs. Henry Chulip north of Berkey, Ohio. George taught school for a while, and around 1890 moved to Toledo and started work in the Toledo Post Office. This began a career of more than 25 years which concluded with his service as Postmaster from 1920-1927. As an outside activity, George worked independently in real estate and the construction of residences in the west end of Toledo. Following retirement from the post office, George established the construction firm of George W. Lathrop and Sons, which as The Lathrop Company carries down to the present as one of Ohio's large contracting firms.

George was also active in civic affairs. In 1932, after leaving the post office, he was asked to head a businessmen's ticket for the county government. George was elected Chairman of the Lucas County Board of Commissioners that year and re-elected in 1934. He took particular interest in the establishment and building of a county tuberculosis sanitarium. It was completed after George's death, and in the main building is a plaque acknowledging his efforts in its behalf.
