James Kiehle, one of Dansville 's most respected citizens, died Monday evening, after a brief illness. He was born in 1811. Three brothers and one sister survive him : Abram Kiehle, of Coudersport, Pa. ; Reuben Kiehle, of Dansville, Cornelius Kiehle and Mrs. Jesse Smith, of Sparta. Mr. Kiehle leaves a family of seven children : Hon. D. L. Kiehle and A. M. Kiehle, of Minneapolis ; Rev. A. A. Kiehle, of Milwaukee ; Mrs. II. A. Fairchild and Mrs. E. P. Clark, of Dansville, and Mrs. George Clark and Miss Carrie Kiehle. The funeral will be held at the residence of Harvey A. Fairchild this morning at 11 o'clock. The remains will be interred in the Kiehle burying ground in Sparta.

REV. AMOS AUGUSTUS KIEHLE, D. D., former pastor of Calvary Presbyterian church, Milwaukee, was born in Dansville, Livingston County, New York, on the 22nd of March, 1847. His father, James Kiehle, was a tanner by trade and occupation, owning a tannery which he carried on for years. He was one of those highly respected citizens who form the conservative element in every prosperous community. A. A. Kiehle's mother was Elizabeth Litchard, a woman of sterling Christian character, who impressed herself indelibly upon her children to their lasting good. Both paternal and maternal grandfathers were residents of Pennsylvania, but removed to New York when their children were young, settling on farms in Livingston County, where they remained during the rest of their lives. Their ancestors came from "Old Holland." A. A. Kiehle's older brother was Rev. D. L. Kiehle LL. D., of Minneapolis, Minnesota, formerly, state superintendent of public instruction of Minnesota, and professor of pedagogy at the University of Minnesota.
A. A. Kiehle received his early education in the district school, which was followed by a course in the Dansville, New York, Seminary, an institution of higher education, with something more than a local reputation for the thoroughness of its instruction. He then taught for two years in Canandaigua Academy, and in the meantime prepared himself for a collegiate course, which he took at Hamilton College, Clinton, New York, entering that institution in September, 1867, and graduating from there in 1871. While in college he was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. He was also a faithful and successful student, with a record for thorough scholarship. As student and teacher, he paid special attention to the study of elocution, in which he won several awards and acquired a facility and power as a public speaker which proved of great practical advantage to him in his professional life. He believed that the study of language and elocution are not accorded the place in a liberal course of study which their importance demands. In the fall of 1871, he entered Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and graduated from there in the class of 1874. Soon after he received and accepted a call to the pastorate of the Franklin Avenue Presbyterian church of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and, on the 21st of October, 1874, he was ordained to the gospel ministry and installed pastor of that church. The duties of this position he discharged with much fidelity until February, 1878, when he accepted a call from the First Presbyterian church of Stillwater, Minnesota, where he labored with great ability and success until the summer of 1881, when he became pastor of Calvary Presbyterian church of Milwaukee. During his pastorate the church more than doubled its membership, a heavy debt was been paid, the church building was enlarged and the congregations greatly increased. May 13th, 1874, Mr. Kiehle was married to Miss Julia Reed of Livonia, New York. She died August 1st, 1878, leaving two daughters, Bessie M. and Grace J. July 28th, 1881, Mr. Kiehle married Frances Decker of South Livonia, New York, who died March 10th, 1885,leaving one child, a son, Ernest. On the 24th of June, 1890, Mr. Kiehle married Miss Bessie Harrison of Milwaukee.
Mr. Kiehle was a Republican in politics; and, while he was in no sense a "political preacher," he took a deep interest in all public questions, whether political, social or industrial, and never neglected his duties as a citizen. He was eminently a preacher of the gospel, but was fully alive to the fact that the gospel has a very close relation to daily, practical life, and he did not hesitate to point out and emphasize that relation in a manner that left a lasting impression. As a preacher, Mr. Kiehle had a popular manner, was an impressive reader of the scriptures, had a voice that easily fills the largest audience rooms and was most pleasant to the ear. His style was clear, direct, and forcible and often most eloquent, while the plain truths of scripture seemed to acquire a new power as they fell from his lips.

Death of An Uncle of Mrs. Cart W. Scovel

Mrs. Carl W, Scovel this morning received word of the death last evening at a hospital in Rochester, where he had been for some weeks for treatment, of her uncle, Rev. Amos A. Kiehle, D. D., of Livonia. His age was 76 years.

Dr. Kiehle has several times preached at the First Presbyterian church in this city and was well known to many here. He was a graduate of Hamilton college in the class of '71 and of Union Theological seminary three years later. He held pastorates at Minneapolis and Stillwater, Minn., and then went to Milwaukee, where for twenty five years he was pastor of Calvary Presbyterian church. It was about twelve years ago that he thought to retire from an active pastorate and make his home at Livonia, N. Y., on the shores of Conesus lake, where he has a very attractive place. For a time he was in great demand as a supply preacher and was nearly every Sunday in a pulpit somewhere and always preached with great acceptance. Several years ago the old and historic Presbyterian church at Livonia became without a pastor and an arrangement was made with Dr. Kiehle to preach there on Sunday mornings only and to perform some of the other duties of an active pastor without becoming a full pastor of the church. That plan continued until a few weeks ago when Dr. Kiehle had to give it up on account of ill health.

Dr. Kiehle is survived by his wife, by one son and one daughter, also by one brother and three sisters. The funeral will be held at the church at Livonia on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and by special request of the family will be conducted by Rev. Carl W. Scovel of Cortland, who also conducted the funeral service of a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Kiehle a few years ago.

For this reason the mid-week meeting at the First Presbyterian church in this city and the study classes which had been postponed on account of Thanksgiving from Thursday until Friday evening will be omitted entirely this week.

DR. FREDERICK A. KIEHLE, M. D. For twenty years Dr. Frederick A. Kiehle
has been engaged in the practice of medicine in Portland and during this
period has gained an extensive practice, and is today regarded as one of the
leading physicians of this city. He was born in Preston, Minnesota, in August,
1872, and is a son of David L. and Mary (Gilman) Kiehle, who were married in
New York city. They became the parents of four children, Frederick A. and
three daughters. David L. Kiehle possessed a thorough education, served for
seven years as president of the State Normal School at St. Cloud and for
thirteen years as state superintendent of public instruction of Minnesota and
later was a member of the faculty of the University of Minnesota.

Frederick A. Kiehle received his preliminary education in the public
schools of St. Cloud and Minneapolis, Minnesota, and then entered the
University of Minnesota, from which he was graduated with the degree of
Bachelor of Arts in 1894. Later he entered the medical school of his alma
mater, from which he was graduated, with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in
1901. After serving one year as interne in St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul,
the Doctor entered upon the practice of his profession in Utah, where he
remained four years. He then went to Europe for a year's study, and in 1908
came to Portland, where he has met with large professional success.

On October 2, 1913, in Oxford, England, Dr. Kiehle was united in marriage
to Miss Clare Cross, who was a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She attended
the public schools of that city and later graduated from the University of
Minnesota. Dr. and Mrs. Kiehle have two children, David Litchard, now fourteen
years of age, and Katherine Gilman, twelve years old, both of whom are
attending school in France for one year. Dr. Kiehle is a member of the
Multnomah County Medical Society, the Oregon State Medical Society and the
American Medical Association and is a Fellow of the American College of
Surgeons and other national societies, while socially he belongs to the
Arlington Club, the University Club, the Multnomah Club and the Waverly Golf
Club. Dr. Kiehle enlisted for service in the United States Naval Reserve
during the late war and received a commission as lieutenant, with which rank
he was honorably discharged at the close of the war. He has served for the
port five years as a member of the board of directors of the Portland Public
Library.

KIEHLE, David Litchard, educator, was born in Dansville, N.Y., Feb. 7, 1837 ; son of James and Elizabeth (Litchard) Kiehle and grandson of Abraham Kiehle and of John Litchard.

His first ancestor in America emigrated from Germany in the eighteenth century and settled in Lehigh county. Pa. David attended the State normal school at Albany, X.Y., in 1856, and was gradu- ated from Hamilton college, A.B., 1861. A.M., 1864, and fi'om the Union Theological seminary in 1865. He was married, July 17, 1863, to Mary Oilman. He was ordained to the Presbyterian ministry in 1865, and was pastor of tlie Presbj'- terian church at Preston, Minn., 1865-75 ; countj' superintendent of schools in Fillmore county, Minn., 1869-75 ; president of the State normal school at St. Cloud, Minn., 1875-81 ; state super- intendent of public instruction of Minnesota, 1881-93, and was elected professor of pedagogy in the University of Minnesota in 1893 and presi- dent of the department of superintendence of the National Educational association in 1894. His son, Frederick A. Kiehle, was graduated M.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1901. Pro- fessor Kieiile received the degree of LL.D. from Hamilton college in 1887.


David Litchard Keihle^ b. Feb. 7, 1837. The following
is from a sketch found in a History of Minnesota:

"Professor David Litchard Keihle spent his youth in the
graded schools of Dansville, N. Y. ; began to teach at sixteen years
of age ; attended the State Normal School at Albany, and gradu-
ated in 1856 ; taught three years in the Canandaigua Academy ;
entered the junior class of Hamilton College, Clinton, New York,
in 1859, and graduated in 1861, one of the 'honor' members of the
class. While in college, in addition to the classical course, he con-
nected himself with the laboratory and took a special Course in
chemistry. He taught a graded school in Monroe, Michigan, dur-
ing the year 1862 ; then took a full course of studies in the Union
Theological Seminary ; was graduated in 1865, and ordained to the
Presbyterian ministry. While preparing for this work he taught
in the Polytechnic and Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn, in all
nearly three years.

"In 1865 he came to Minnesota, organized a Presbyterian
Church at Preston, Fillmore County, became its pastor and re-
mained there ten years. During the last six of those years he was
County Superintendent of Schools, driven into that work on ac-
count of poor health. By riding on horseback from school to
school, and from town to town, he gradually improved, and was
able to fill the requirements of the office. During five of these
years that he was Superintendent he preached once a day on Sun-
day, simply supplying the pulpit without doing pastoral work.
The last three years that he was at Preston he was one of the di-
rectors of the State Normal Schools; in 1875 was appointed by
the board to take charge of the Normal School at Saint Cloud. Li
1 88 1 he resigned this position to accept the appointment of
State Superintendent of Public Instruction of Minnesota. In
this position he remained through six successive reappointments
until 1893, when he resigned, accepting an election as Professor of Pedagogy in the University of Minnesota. In this position he
remained until his resignation in 1902.

"The subject of education seems to be the one absorbing theme
with him. His best thoughts, his time, his energies are devoted to
the questions, "What is modern education, and how can it be made
available and practical in the philosophy and theories of the
day ?"

From this sketch it is evident that Professor Keihle is not only
a zealous and devoted educator, but that he is a man of notable
ability, and that he has by his merits won the distinction he has
been favored with. When last heard from he was engaged in the
composition of a work the title of which is "A Philosophy of the
History of Education," which may be expected to embody his best
and maturest conceptions. On the 25th of July, 1864, he was mar-
ried to Miss Mary Oilman, of Dansville, N. Y. They have four
children :

MRS. LUCY KIEHLE CLARK

Private funeral services were held today for Mrs. Lucy Kiehle Clark, who died Friday at her home, 3632 Pillsbury avenue S. Mrs. Clark was horn in Dansville, N. Y., Dec. 29, 1855, and married George Clark of Towanda, Pa., In 1878. Subsequently, they moved to Owatonna, and, in ISaS, to Minneapolis.

Mrs. Clark was a member of Calvary Baptist church. She is survived by a sister, Carrie Kiehle, Dansville; a brother, A. M. Kiehle, Minneapolis; five daughters, Mrs. Alfred Johnson of Duluth, Mrs. H. L. EHon. Mrs. G. O. Egdahl, Mrs. E. G. Hoefflin and Cora Clark, and two granddaughters, all of Minneapolis. Burial was la Lakewood cemetery.

Samuel A. Dodd, manager of the Minneapolis branch of the Johnson Candy Company,
is a successful business man. A native of Michigan, his birth occurred in
Cheboygan, on the 2d of August, 1885, a son of Samuel and Mary L. (Bellant)
Dodd. His father lived in Chicago, Illinois, and followed the lakes and ocean
throughout his life. He died in his fifty-fifth year. Mrs. Dodd was a daughter
of Peter Bellant, a pioneer lumber­man of Michigan, who died in his
seventy-second year.
The public schools of Cheboygan afforded Samuel A. Dodd his early education and
for two years he was a student in the local high school. At the termination of
that time he put his textbooks aside and secured a position in a lumber mill at
Duluth, where he remained two years. Subsequently he entered the service of the
United States government and for two years was assistant at the Wind Point
Lighthouse at Racine, Wisconsin. He resigned that position and became associated
with the National Biscuit Company at Racine, remaining in the employ of that
company for five years, later becoming associated with the Robert A. Johnson
Company, a candy concern of Milwaukee, and after ten years in the home office
was sent by them to Minneapolis as manager of the branch office. He is
discharging the many duties devolving upon him to the complete satisfaction of
all concerned and the best principles of honor and integrity govern him in his
transactions.
On the 3d of August, 1906, at Waukegan, Illinois, was celebrated the marriage of
Samuel A. Dodd to Miss Emma Sorenson, a daughter of Jacob Sorenson, of Racine.
Mr. Sorenson engaged in farming for many years, as had his father and
grandfather before him, and he is now living retired at the age of seventy
years. To Mr. and Mrs. Dodd two children have been born: Bernice, thirteen years
of age; and Ivy, aged three Mrs. Dodd is a woman of culture and refinement and
is socially prominent.
In his political views Samuel A. Dodd is a strict adherent of the republican
party and the principles for which it stands. During the World war he took an
active part in all drives and was one of the most effective war workers in
Milwaukee, in which city he was then residing. For recreation Mr. Dodd turns to
the great outdoors and he is particularly fond of fishing, in which sport he is
proficient. In early life he learned the value of close application to the thing
at hand and he devotes the greater part of his time and attention to his
managerial duties and to the care of his extensive property interests in Racine.
