| 1253 | KIEHLE, David Litchard, educator, was born in Dansville, N.Y., Feb. 7, 1837 ; son of James and Elizabeth (Litchard) Kiehle and grandson of Abraham Kiehle and of John Litchard. His first ancestor in America emigrated from Germany in the eighteenth century and settled in Lehigh county. Pa. David attended the State normal school at Albany, X.Y., in 1856, and was gradu- ated from Hamilton college, A.B., 1861. A.M., 1864, and fi'om the Union Theological seminary in 1865. He was married, July 17, 1863, to Mary Oilman. He was ordained to the Presbyterian ministry in 1865, and was pastor of tlie Presbj'- terian church at Preston, Minn., 1865-75 ; countj' superintendent of schools in Fillmore county, Minn., 1869-75 ; president of the State normal school at St. Cloud, Minn., 1875-81 ; state super- intendent of public instruction of Minnesota, 1881-93, and was elected professor of pedagogy in the University of Minnesota in 1893 and presi- dent of the department of superintendence of the National Educational association in 1894. His son, Frederick A. Kiehle, was graduated M.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1901. He prepared at St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H. At Princeton he was in Ivy Club. Freshman and sophomore years he roomed with Cap Wister, and junior and senior years with Lew Van Dusen, Buzz Roberts, and Cap Wister. After Princeton, Fran graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He then spent two years interning in Philadelphia and a year's residence in Boston. His general practice was interrupted by Pearl Harbor. In our 25-year book, Fran wrote: "The Army ordered me to become an X-ray specialist, which I did as best I could for a couple of years in the South Pacific. After my return to civilian life I took about three more years training in the field, which led to my present job of chief of radiology at Montgomery Hospital in Norristown, Pa." Fran is survived by Maria, his wife of 51 years, and son Joshua, to whom the class extends its sincere condolences. He was a sawmill operator and attended Concord Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, James Bailey of Mount Pleasant; two daughters, Marion Herrington of Sidney and Sharon Jeffery of Batesville; a half brother, Ernest Dean Bailey of Yuma, Ariz.; a sister, Osie Duke of Sidney; 25 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Janie Bailey; his wife, Noba Ann Stroud Bailey; two sons, Douglas Bailey and Paul Bailey; four brothers, Ray Bailey, General Bailey, Elmer Bailey and Silas Bailey; five half brothers, Charles Bailey, John Henry Bailey, Vernie Lee Bailey, Deek “Earnie” Bailey and Dan Bailey; and two half sisters, Cybl Bailey and Sylvia Bailey. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cornerstone Baptist Church with the Rev. Matthew Adam and the Rev. Alvin Wiles officiating. Burial will be in Barren Fork Cemetery with arrangements by Eddie’s Family Funeral Home of Melbourne.
